General Steps for Salah (for both men and women)
- Intention (Niyyah):
- Before starting, make an intention in your heart for the specific prayer (e.g., Dhuhr, Asr).
- Takbir al-Ihram (Opening Takbir):
- Raise both hands to shoulder or ear level and say “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest).
- Men generally raise their hands to shoulder or ear level.
- Women can raise their hands slightly lower, typically to shoulder level.
- Qiyam (Standing Position):
- Place the right hand over the left on the chest. Men place them above the navel, while women place them on the chest.
- Recite Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by a short Surah or verses of the Qur’an.
- Ruku (Bowing):
- Say “Allahu Akbar” and bow down, keeping your back straight and parallel to the ground.
- Place hands on the knees with fingers spread, with arms away from the body.
- Women keep their arms closer to their body in Ruku.
- Recite “Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great) three times.
- Rising from Ruku (I’tidal):
- Stand back up and say, “Sami’ Allahu liman Hamidah” (Allah hears the one who praises Him).
- Then say “Rabbana wa lakal Hamd” (Our Lord, and all praise is Yours).
- Sujood (Prostration):
- Say “Allahu Akbar” and go into Sujood.
- Place the forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes on the ground.
- Men keep their elbows away from the body; women keep their elbows close to their body and legs together.
- Recite “Subhana Rabbiyal A’la” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) three times.
- Sitting between Sujoods (Jalsa):
- Say “Allahu Akbar” and sit back.
- Men sit with the left foot flat and right foot upright, while women keep both feet to the right side.
- Say “Rabbighfir li” (My Lord, forgive me).
- Second Sujood:
- Perform a second Sujood following the same procedure as the first.
- Tashahhud (Sitting after the second Rak’ah):
- After completing two Rak’ahs, sit in the Tashahhud position.
- Recite the Tashahhud: “At-Tahiyyatu lillahi…”
