When is Dua Qunut Recited?

  1. In Witr Prayer:
    • It is commonly recited in the Witr prayer during the last rak’ah, especially in the last ten nights of Ramadan, according to many schools of thought like Hanafi and Shafi’i.
    • The timing of recitation can vary; it is often recited before or after the rukuʿ (bowing).
  2. In Calamities (Qunut al-Nazilah):
    • In times of distress or calamities, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged the recitation of Qunut al-Nazilah in the five daily prayers.
    • This form of Qunut includes supplications seeking help, protection, or relief from Allah.

Text of Dua Qunut (Witr Version)

One of the commonly recited versions is:

Transliteration: Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayt, wa ‘afini fiman ‘afayt, wa tawallani fiman tawallayt, wa barik li fima a‘tayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda ‘alayk, innahu la yadhillu man walayt, wa la ya‘izzu man ‘adayt, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta‘alayt.

Translation: O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me health among those You have granted health, protect me among those You have protected, bless me in what You have given, and save me from the evil of what You have decreed. Verily, You decree, and none can pass decree upon You. Indeed, the one You show loyalty to will never be humiliated, and the one You show enmity to will never be honored. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted.
