Wudu (or Wadu) is the Islamic ritual of purification before prayer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to perform it properly:
- Intention (Niyyah):
- Begin with the intention to perform wudu for purification, which is done internally in your heart. There’s no need to say it out loud.
- Start with Bismillah (In the Name of Allah):
- Say “Bismillah” (بسم الله) to begin.
- Wash Hands:
- Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, starting with the right hand. Ensure water reaches between the fingers.
- Rinse Mouth (Madhmadah):
- Take water into your mouth using your right hand and rinse your mouth three times. Swish the water around each time.
- Rinse Nose (Istinshaaq):
- Use your right hand to take water up into your nose and sniff gently. Then use your left hand to blow it out. Repeat this three times.
- Wash Face:
- Wash your entire face from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear. Do this three times, ensuring all areas are wet.
- Wash Arms:
- Wash your right arm from the wrist up to and including the elbow three times. Repeat with the left arm.
- Wipe Head (Masah):
- Wet your hands and wipe over your head, starting from the front and moving to the back, then return your hands to the front.
- Wipe Ears:
- Using the same wet hands, wipe the inside and outside of both ears. Insert your index fingers into your ears and wipe the back with your thumbs.
- Wash Feet:
- Wash your right foot up to the ankle, including between the toes, three times. Repeat with the left foot.
- Finish with the Shahada:
- Recite the Shahada: “Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadur rasulullah” (أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدًا رسول الله), which means, “I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Messenger.” Do wadu properly.
Your wudu is now complete! This purification will remain valid until you break it by certain actions (like sleeping, using the bathroom, or losing consciousness). Do wadu properly.
