The Sayyidul Istighfar (the Master of Supplications for Forgiveness) is a highly virtuous dua (supplication) for seeking forgiveness from Allah. Here is the Arabic text:Sayyidul Istighfar in Arabic

سَيِّدُ الِاسْتِغْفَارِ:

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ.

Transliteration:

Allahumma anta rabbi, la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka, wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa’dika mastata’tu. A’udhu bika min sharri ma sana’tu. Abu’u laka bini’matika ‘alayya, wa abu’u bidhanbi, faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfiru adh-dhunuba illa anta.

This supplication is recommended to be recited in the morning and evening. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said that whoever recites this with conviction in the morning and dies before the evening, or recites it in the evening and dies before the morning, will enter Paradise (Bukhari).

The phrase “Sayyidul Istighfar” (سيد الاستغفار) translates to “The Master of Supplications for Forgiveness” in Arabic. It refers to a specific and highly virtuous dua (supplication) for seeking Allah’s forgiveness. This supplication is considered one of the best and most comprehensive ways to ask for Allah’s pardon.

The Dua of Sayyidul Istighfar:

The dua is as follows:

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Transliteration:

Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka, wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa’dika ma istata’tu, a’udhu bika min sharri ma sana’tu, abu’u laka bini’matika ‘alayya, wa abu’u bidhanbi, faghfir li fa’innahu la yaghfiru adh-dhunuba illa anta.

Translation:

O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no deity worthy of worship except You. You created me, and I am Your servant, and I abide by Your covenant and promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sins. So forgive me, for verily none can forgive sins except You.


Virtue of Sayyidul Istighfar:

  1. Great Reward: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

    “Whoever recites Sayyidul Istighfar during the day with firm belief in it and dies on that day before the evening, he will be among the people of Paradise. And whoever recites it at night with firm belief in it and dies before morning, he will be among the people of Paradise.”
    (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6306)

  2. Comprehensive Acknowledgment: The dua encompasses:
    • Affirmation of Allah’s oneness and Lordship.
