Translation and Meaning

Surah Al-Fatiha (The Opening) is the first chapter of the Quran and is considered one of the most important surahs in Islam. It consists of 7 verses and is recited in every unit of a Muslim’s prayer (Salah). Here is the translation and brief explanation of each verse:

1. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

2. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.
   • Allah is the Creator and Sustainer of everything in existence, deserving all praise.
3. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

4. Master of the Day of Judgment.
   • Allah is the ultimate judge, and every soul will be accountable to Him on the Day of Judgment.
5. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.
   • This verse affirms monotheism and dependence on Allah, signifying that only Allah is worthy of worship and the source of all help.
6. Guide us on the Straight Path,
   • This is a prayer for guidance to the path that leads to righteousness, success, and Allah’s pleasure.
7. The path of those who have received Your grace; not the path of those who have brought down wrath upon themselves, nor of those who have gone astray.
   • Here, we ask to follow the path of those who received Allah’s guidance and not the path of those who incurred Allah’s anger or strayed from His teachings.

Virtues (Fazilat) of Surah Al-Fatiha

1. Essential Part of Prayer: Surah Al-Fatiha is an integral part of Salah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever performs a prayer without reciting the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatiha), his prayer is incomplete” (Sahih Muslim).
2. Considered as a Cure: Surah Al-Fatiha is often called “Al-Shifa” (The Cure) for physical and spiritual ailments. It is known to bring comfort, healing, and protection when recited with faith.
3. Direct Dialogue with Allah: In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah says, “I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves… When My servant says, ‘Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds,’ I say, ‘My servant has praised Me.’” This Hadith illustrates the direct connection and dialogue between Allah and the one reciting.
4. Comprehensive Essence of the Quran: Surah Al-Fatiha is known as “Umm al-Kitab” (Mother of the Book) because it encapsulates the Quran’s core message of monotheism, guidance, worship, and reliance on Allah.
