Translation
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
- May the hands of Abu Lahab perish, and he himself perish!
- His wealth and his gains will not benefit him.
- He will burn in a flaming Fire.
- And his wife [as well], the carrier of firewood,
- Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.
Meaning and Explanation
- Background:
Surah Al-Lahab was revealed in response to the hostility of Abu Lahab (the uncle of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) and his wife, who were staunch enemies of Islam. Abu Lahab openly opposed the Prophet ﷺ, mocked him, and hindered his mission. - Symbolism:
- The “hands of Abu Lahab” symbolize his power, resources, and efforts, which ultimately failed.
- His wife is described as “carrying firewood” to signify her active role in spreading harm and fueling hostility against the Prophet ﷺ. The “rope of twisted fiber” around her neck may symbolize her eventual punishment.
- Eternal Rejection:
This Surah is a condemnation of those who oppose truth and righteousness, emphasizing that worldly wealth and status are of no benefit in the Hereafter.
Virtue and Lessons
- Divine Justice:
The Surah highlights the inevitable defeat of falsehood and the triumph of truth. - Warning Against Arrogance:
It serves as a warning to those who reject guidance out of pride and hostility, illustrating the futility of worldly power. - Clarity in Prophecy:
The Surah is a clear prophecy of Abu Lahab’s disgrace, as he lived and died in disbelief despite having ample opportunity to repent. - Endurance in Faith:
For Muslims, it serves as a reminder to remain steadfast in their faith despite opposition or mockery.4o
