Tayammum is the alternative to wudu (ablution) or ghusl (full-body purification) when water is unavailable or one is unable to use it. Here’s how to perform tayammum properly:
1. Make the Intention (Niyyah):
- Begin with the intention in your heart to perform tayammum for purification. There is no need to say it aloud.
2. Say Bismillah (In the Name of Allah):
- Start with saying “Bismillah” (بسم الله).
3. Strike Your Hands on a Clean Surface:
- Place your palms on a clean, dust-free surface, such as sand, soil, or a stone. If you’re indoors, you can use any clean surface like a wall or tile that has a bit of dust.
4. Dust Off Your Hands:
- Lightly blow or shake off any excess dust from your hands.
5. Wipe Your Face:
- Use both hands to gently wipe your face once, covering the entire area.
6. Wipe Your Arms:
- Strike your hands on the dusted surface again, if needed, then use your left hand to wipe your right arm up to the elbow, and do the same with your right hand on the left arm.
7. Recite the Shahada (Optional):
- Reciting the Shahada at the end is not mandatory but is a good practice: “Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadur rasulullah”.
Your tayammum is now complete. This purification allows you to perform prayer and other acts of worship requiring wudu. It remains valid until you break it by actions that would normally invalidate wudu or until water becomes available. In situations where water is not available or cannot be used, tayammum is a substitute to wudu (ablution) or ghusl (full-body purification). Here’s how to correctly perform tayammum:You have finished your tayammum. You can now pray and engage in other wudu-required acts of worship because of this purification. Until you violate it by doing something that would typically render wudu invalid or until water becomes available, it is still valid.
